From So What (1974) by Joe Walsh

Welcome to the Club (Walsh) - 5:14

Standin' on the runway, wavin' at the plane
There goes everything you own
You called home collect and they didn't know your name
Starin' at the telephone

Well, they thought he was a doctor, but now he says he's not
But he doesn't seem to know for sure
And accordin' to the symptoms, it isn't all you got
Seems they haven't found the cure

It's gettin' hard to please 'em
Startin' to feel the rub
You know it isn't easy
Well, welcome to the club

Well, you thought they'd take it light, but they're actin' kind of rash
Caught you in a loadin' zone
So they smile real polite and relieve you of your cash
Suddenly you're all alone

Played the double agent
Both your covers blown
You got the place surrounded
There ain't nobody home

It's gettin' hard to please 'em
Startin' to feel the rub
You know it isn't easy
Well, welcome to the club
C'mon and join us in the club

Falling Down (Walsh) - 4:56

Payin' no deposit, no return
Makin' the same mistakes, we never learn
All of the pain in those faces
Trying not to show concern
Spent and broken
Llike a worn-out subway token
In the city

Hangin' in the closet, wait in line
When you go by the laws, you pay the fine
Burnin' the candle at both ends
Twice the light in half the time
Down to crawlin'
Feel like fallin'

Oh, and yes, the rain doesn't have to hurry in the city
Falls sadly to the ground
The rain doesn't have to worry in the city
Only way to fall is down

Fallin' down...

But still you're running in a race that can't be won
Ain't it hard to fill the spaces when they're gone?
Worn out shoes with no laces
Gettin' too loose to stay on
Back to crawlin'
Feel like I'm fallin'

Oh, and yes, the rain takes its time to fall in the city
Falls sadly to the ground
Rain kind of says it all in the city
Only way to fall is down

Fallin' down, fallin' down, fallin' down, fallin' down...

Pavanne (Walsh) - 1:56

Time out (Trebandt, Walsh) - 4:28

Goin' through the motions, tryin' not to snore
Didn't know the gun was loaded
Rowin' through the ocean, caught without an oar
Someone said they've all been broken

Time out, save the play
Try to make the lie last any old way you can
Signed out, all the way
When you speak your mind out, never say what you plan

Found her in the hallway, bangin' on the door
Askin' what the funny smell was
Wake you up to tell you, "It's okay to sleep some more
By the way, is there any you can sell us?"

So the case is gettin' hotter, bleed you 'til you're dry
"Stick 'em up, you just been busted!"
Your basement's full of water, forgot about the tide
Hope to God the pump ain't rusted

Signed out, all the way
When you speak your mind out, never say what you plan
Time out, save the play
Try to make the lie last any old way you can

All Night Laundry Mat Blues (Walsh) - 0:58

I've got the all night laundry mat blues
Washin' everything, all except my shoes
Got ring around the collar, and it smells like sweat
A dollar in the dryer and it ain't dry yet
If you wear clothes, you gotta pay the dues
With the all night laundry mat blues
Yes, you do
The all night laundry mat blues

Turn to Stone (Walsh) - 3:47

Hey, now, the well's run dry
Pages of your book on fire
Read the writing on the wall
Hoe down, it's a showdown
Everywhere you look we're fighting, hear the call
And you know it's gettin' stronger
It can't last very much longer
Turn to stone

Well, there's a change in the wind
You know the signs don't lie
Such a strange feeling and I don't know why
It's takin' such a long time

Backyard people and they work all day
Tired of the speeches
And the way that the reasons keep changin'
Just to make the words rhyme

And you know it's getting stronger
Can't fake 'em out much longer
Turn to stone

And you know it's getting stronger
It can't last very much longer
Turn to stone

Help Me Thru the Night (Walsh) - 3:35

Somewhere along the way I found the meaning
Woke up dreaming along the way
Never quite seems the same when you awaken
And makin' up for the time is such a price to pay
And then they take the dream away
And it just ain't fair

So help me through the night, mama
Help me to ease the pain
And tell me it's alright
Help me through the night once again

That's the danger in pretending
Tryin' to defend yourself from someone else's war
Don't know what they're fighting for
And they just don't care

So help me to see the light, mama
Open my eyes again
And tell me it's alright
Help me through the night once again

Would you help me?
Could you help me?

County Fair (Walsh) - 6:43

Found an old puzzle somebody had quit
Tried a few pieces and hoped that they fit
But they're going together so slowly
It may take me forever to know
If it's only a puzzle...

Parts of the puzzle will never be found
And even though pieces are gone
It's a county fair picture
Part of me's there
Some of the pieces are still at the fair
And it may be forever...

Song for Emma (Walsh) - 4:20

There's a feeling I get when I look to the sky
As if someone is watching
Someone hears every word
We are filled with regret, if for such a short time
But we told Him we loved you
Hopin' somehow He heard
We hope He heard

You were with us for a while, then He took you
And it made your mama cry
I can see it in her eyes
There's a question as to why
And after all this time, still I find that I'm
Without an answer

(Goodbye...)

Goodbye, Emma.
