Witch Wolf (Brandle/Young) - 3:57

Reoccurring symptoms
Answer the baleful howl
Bringing me dreams of darkness
The doer of all that's foul
Raping the minds of infants
Sower of unplanted seeds
Full moon warrior
Doer of sordid deeds

Witch Wolf
Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

Thirteenth hour madman
Bringing my soul to fire
Visions of my sweet Beulah
To torment soon retire

Witch Wolf
Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

Got my one-way ticket
On this hell bound train
I can't seem to stop falling
I bear the wrath of Cain

Witch Wolf
Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

Interpretation

A "Witch Wolf" is a werewolf. The use of the word "Witch" is appropriate to that translation because witches are commonly associated with both magic and with evil, characteristics of a werewolf. It may also be a way of suggesting that the "Witch Wolf" is a particular type of werewolf known as an Alpha Wolf, which is a werewolf that is the first of its line, infecting other werewolves. Many Alpha wolves were reputed to have originated from sorcery (voluntarily or involuntarily), although they could also originate by other means such as a curse. The chorus seems to support the interpretation in the first verse to mean that the author is transformed into a werewolf by "the baleful howl" because in the chorus he is agonizing over why the Witch Wolf (alpha werewolf) is calling for him via the howl.

The first three lines taken together say that the "reoccuring symptoms" are resulting from "the baleful howl" and that these "symptoms" bring "dreams of darkness." This suggests that the "symptoms" are the terror brought on by hearing the werewolf's howl (real or imagined) and that the terror brings nightmares. On another level, the word "symptoms" are often associated with the side-effects of medical conditions, and a human's transformation into a werewolf, according to legend, is the result of a disease called lycanthropy.

There is also a legend that says that a person inflicted with lycanthropy will transform into a werewolf not only under the full moon, but also upon hearing the sound of a howl. Perhaps, then, the "reoccuring symptoms" that "answer the baleful howl" are the transformation into a werewolf upon hearing the howl, resulting in "dreams of darkness" that are not nightmares resulting from terror so much as the nightmares resulting from memories of the evil, destructive thoughts of the person while a werewolf that later surface while the person sleeps. As mentioned before, the chorus suggests that this interpretation is the primary one.

It would be truly terrible nightmares that would be characterized as "raping the minds of infants" since rape is one of the more powerful words in the English language and since infants are the most innocent and vulnerable of victims. Perhaps, the line is referring to a true invasion of a telepathic nature (similar to Freddy Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies several years later), but I am unaware of any werewolf legends involving telepathy or mind-control. Perhaps, also, it is recounting the "rape" of the mind that occurs when the person transforms into a werewolf and assumes that evil persona, something which would be especially traumatic in the mind of an innocent infant infected with the disease.

"Sower of unplanted seeds" suggests that this is unnatural, and a werewolf is indeed unnatural. A werewolf is also a "Full moon warrior" since the transformation of a human with lycanthropy into a werewolf is triggered in legend by the full moon. Finally, there is no doubt that a werewolf is a "doer of sordid deeds" given the atrocities with which they are often associated.

The use of the number 13 is consistent with superstitious interpretations of 13 as a number associated with bad luck, witches, and evil. Also, even though the 13th hour is actually 1pm in a 24 hour time system, the term in this context creates a mental image of the middle of the night, one hour past midnight (12). While in werewolf form, the person is a "madman" who brings his "soul to fire" by damning himself to Hell with his actions.

The "sweet Beulah" of which the author has visions is probably a reference to an idyllic land called Beulah near the end of life's journey in Bunyan's _Pilgrim's Progress_. Bunyan probably originally selected the name in reference to a verse from the Bible (Isaiah 62:4):

No longer will they call you Deserted,
Or name your land Desolate.
But you will be called Hephzibah,
And your land Beulah;
For the Lord will take delight in you,
And your land will be married.

His "visions" of Buelah are soon retired "to torment," meaning he is tormented by the realization that Beulah (Heaven) is no longer something which he can look forward to.

His "one way ticket on this hell-bound train" is a reflection of the belief that werewolves are irrevocably damned once they taste of human blood. Thus, cycle continues ("I can't seem to stop falling"). He ends by equating his curse and his damnation with "the wrath of Cain," the son of Adam and Eve who was the first murderer in human history (according to the Bible Cain murdered his brother Abel in a rage of jealousy).

The Grove of Eglantine (DeYoung) - 5:00

Hey you there
Cast an eye this way
You with that young lust virgin smile
Don't pretend that you're quickly melting before my eyes
That's a lie

'Cause I see all of you
Quite clearly now
I like our looks your moves you know everything
So when I ring you up in the evening I shall meet you

In the Grove of Eglantine
Just south of man's delight
Close to a soft flowing stream

In the Grove of Eglantine
We will join as lovers might
Between the lines of a dream

Your magic lips
Have made me realize
All of the pleasures man can fantasize
So don't pretend that you're sad to see me say goodbye
That's a lie

You're a wicked wench...ha
But thanks for all the laughs
You and your young lust virgin smile
And when I'm gone for awhile
I'll once more want to meet you

In the Grove of Eglantine
Just south of man's delight
Close to a soft flowing stream

In the Grove of Eglantine
We will join as lovers might
Between the lines of a dream
In the Grove of Eglantine
Just south of man's delight
Close to a soft flowing stream

In the Grove of Eglantine
We will join as lovers might
Between the lines of a dream

In Eglantine...of a dream (fade)

Interpretation

[Excerpted from an interview with Dennis DeYoung on the Jonathan Brandmeyer show on WLUP in 1997]
DDY: ...I have a song on there [The Serpent Is Rising] called The Grove Of Eglantine, youknow what that means?
JB: No, I have no idea
DDY: Oh please.
JB: I have no idea
DDY: Well, it's a Victorian reference to a part of the female anatomy
JB: The Grove of Eglantine refers to the vagina?
DDY: Well, yeah.
JB: Get outta here!
DDY: They call it The Grove at Eglantine, but I changed it to The Grove ofEglantine.
[End interview excerpt]

With that in mind, lines like "just south of man's delight", "close to a soft flowing stream" and "we will join as lovers might" take on a whole new meaning...

Young Man (Young/Young) - 4:45

People say with age there comes experience
But answers seem more distant every day
The good news and the bad news come together
What politician played this trick you say?

Who can we get to win the fight?
A young man
Who can we get to make love all night?
A young man
Who do we send away to die?
A young man
I heard a lonely woman cry for
A young man

Ideologies mean very little
When in practicality they're quite the same
If God is love how can Her words be twisted
Into holy wars where men will kill and maim

Who can we get to win the fight?
A young man
Who can we get to make love all night?
A young man
Who do we send away to die?
A young man
I heard a lonely woman cry for
A young man

Come home my son, we'll give you a rest
Welcome my son, we'll give you the best
Time's stowaway, the young man
So short are the days, of the young man

As Bad As This (Curulewski) - 6:10

Did you ever in your life before
Feel as bad as this?
Did you ever in good time think
My life had gone amiss?
Now I feel I've been unfair
'cause I catch you hanging there.
Did you ever in your life before
Feel as bad as this?

God knows I tried a half a year
But it didn't do no good.
My damnedest try to make it work,
I knew it never would.
Now there's nothin' wrong with you,
And there's nothing you could ever do.
God knows I tried a half a year
But it didn't do no good.

The times were good,
But over now,
A pleasant memory.
I'm sorry, there's another face
One that's close to me.
You know 'bout what I learned
And there's no stone left unturned.
The times were good,
But over now,
A pleasant memory. (Sigh)

Winner Take All (DeYoung/Lofrano) - 3:10

You've got to be strong
If you're going to make it baby
You've got to stand tall
If you're going to survive

So just take my hand
And I'll show you how to feel alive
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Winner take all
That's the way I play it
Playing my cards as the world goes by
Winner take all
That's the way that I get high

You live your own life
Always needing someone baby
Then I appear to answer your call
Together I know
We can ride the highway past them all
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Winner take all
That's the way I play it
Playing my cards as the world goes by
Winner take all
That's the way that I get high
High high

Winner take all
That's the way I play it
Playing my cards as the world goes by
Winner take all
That's the way that I get high

22 Years (Curulewski) - 3:39

I've got a crazy little mama
Lord, she's my heart and soul
I don't even have to tell ya
She knows how to rock and roll

Well this crazy lovin' mama
Makin' everything all right
I don't even have to tell ya
She makes things seem outta sight
All right

Whenever I'm down
And nothings going right at all
I just think about my baby
And all I've got to do is call

When the evening's looking pretty
And the day's hanging out too long
I know my baby cares about me
Right or wrong

It took a long time to find her
It took a lot of laughs and tears
It took a long time to find her
It took me 22 years

I've got a crazy little mama
Said, Lord, she's my heart and soul
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
I don't even have to tell ya
She know's how to rock and roll

Well this crazy lovin' mama
Makin' everything all right
Yeah
I don't even have to tell ya
She makes things seem outta sight
All right

It took a long time to find her
It took a lot of laughs and tears
It took a long time to find her
It took me 22 years
Oh my

22 years
22 years
22 years
22 years
22 years
22 years
22 years

Interpretation

From styxophrenic@hotmail.com:

I have a possible interpretation to 22 Years. John Curulewski was born in 1950. 1950 + 22= 1972. Since he found the person he was searching for, it could mean that he was married in 1972, and had Jamie, his son, in 1974. This info is found on the back of the Man of Miracles album. It says, "Welcome, Jamie!!!" One of the reasons he quit Styx, a year later, was to spend time with his family. That would have made Jamie one year old. Good enough reason!

Jonas Psalter - 4:41

When Captain Jonas Psalter
Sailed his ship to sea
Anne Bonny kept him company

The skull and crossbones flew
Above the ocean blue
The captain's men where a pirate's crew

The ships they sought to take
Were of the Spanish Main
A gift from Ferdinand of Spain

And though you rob and kill to find your dream
Your crimes are hardly what they seem

Tortuga held the treasure of a thousand kings
So Jonas planned to steal everything

Two hundred men stood guard
Around the fortune's nest
But Psalter's steel slew all the rest

And when the smoke had cleared
And bloody bodies lay
Everyone could hear the minstrel play

Woo woo Jonas Psalter
You've captured every prize
There is to dream of in one life

And so we wonder why
We found you in your bed
With that bullet in your head

Interpretation

Following the discovery of the New World of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Spain's vast empire in the New World was known as the Spanish Main. Originally applying only to the mainland (the origin of the name, no doubt), the Spanish Main eventually came to include the West Indian Islands and the waters of the Caribbean, which were traversed by the Spanish treasure fleets. Incidentally, the Spanish Main was indeed a gift of Ferdinand of Spain. Ferdinand V and Isabel I, King and Queen of Castile and Leon, chartered Columbus' voyage.

Tortuga is a small, turtle-shaped island ("tortuga" is Spanish for "turtle") near the island of Hispaniola. It was a base for buccaneer raiders until they were thrown off the island in 1691 by the Spanish, who considered the island part of the Spanish Main.

Envious of Spain's new-found wealth, the French and English sent privateers and then buccaneers to strike at the Spanish Main. Eventually, independent pirates operating for personal gain were on the scene as well. Not surprisingly, the Spanish considered all to be simply pirates.

Anne Bonny was one of these pirates. (Thanks to Rebecca-of-Tulsa for this interesting tidbit). However, as I can find no information about a real pirate named Jonas Psalter, I can only assume that unlike Anne Bonny he is fictional. He may have been based on the pirate Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny's lover, and captain of the ship on which she sailed as a pirate from 1710 to 1720. If so, the similarity ends there, for Calico Jack is never known to have taken Tortuga and it's riches, and he died by hanging following a trial, not by a bullet while he slept (or suicide?). This ending may have been chosen for a more dramatic effect. In any case, the message is the same:: fame and fortune do not necessarily lead to happiness. This theme foreshadows that of another song with a name reminiscent of pirates, Pieces Of Eight.

The Serpent Is Rising (Curulewski) - 4:55

In the abyss of space
From the center of time
A superman race
Moves the Serpent to climb

The journey has lasted
Seven ages or more
Life after life
Must pass through the door

The secret revealed
When you leave your cave
Is a glory of thunder
And life from the grave

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The people have massed
In the center of town
We drink from a glass
And the world turns around

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

Interpretation

Dennis DeYoung once said in a radio interview that The Serpent Is Rising is about "the third eye coming up" which would imply that this is a song about an penile erection....

...that Dennis is such a kidder! ;-P Of course, given JC's strange sense of humor, evident in the song Plexiglas Toilet, it would not be surprising to find that he intentionally structured the song to make this play on words.

The Serpent Is Rising creates an image hinting of science-fantasy as it uses symbolism to suggest the idea that life on Earth actually has alien origins, floating in from the far reaches of space in the form of RNA, a basic building block of life that is then transformed into life in the "primordial soup" of Earth's early atmosphere with the stimulation of an electrical discharge. This idea may have originated from reading a well-publicized article on just such a theory that appeared at the same time as this song was written and recorded (Crick, F.H.C. and Orgel, L.E., "Directed Panspermia," Icarus,19, 341-346, 1973).

Although the chorus does not appear until later in the song, it is helpful to understand its meaning to unlock the meanings of the verses of the song.

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

In the chorus, we are finally given the clues to understanding what "the Serpent" from the story is truly representing in this elaborate analogy. The second line "uncoiling in your spine" is the key, for the spine is the organ which links all parts of the human body. The spine, like all human tissue, is composed of cells. All the cells in a person's body have one thing in common, the DNA which contains the genetic blueprint for that person. The physical form of each person's DNA is a double helix, which can be visualized as two interwined spiraling strings molecules. So, "the Serpent" is a double-helix of DNA that is "uncoiling in your spine." Contained in that DNA is the blueprint for the person, including the physical makeup of the brain which allows for free and complex thought, "bringing you light from the depths of your mind." It is, therefore, from the "serpent" that we have achieved the enlightenment to finally understand our origins.

In the abyss of space
From the center of time
A superman race
Moves the Serpent to climb

The use of the word "abyss" is technically correct to desribe the endless depths of outer space, but it also invokes images of Hell, which is associated in modern Judeo-Christian belief with Satan, who first appeared in the Garden Of Eden as a Serpent and has been symbolically associated with that reptile ever since.

"The center of time" probably refers to a state of being outside of time as we know it. This is a familiar theme to science fiction (for example, the Prophets from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine live in a state independent of time). Such a state of being would be conceivable for "a superman race."

The "superman race" is an advanced race of beings that apparently exist in the farthest reaches of space and live in state that is outsde of the limitations of time. These beings send the spores of RNA into space, initiating the chain of events from which the DNA of life will eventually come to arrive on Earth, thus moving "the serpent to climb".

The journey has lasted
Seven ages or more
Life after life
Must pass through the door

"The journey" of the spores has taken a very long time. An "age", while not of definite length, is usually measured in terms of centuries, millennia, or more. In addition, the specific choice of "seven ages" reflects the common usage in numerology and in apocalyptic literature (such as the books of Daniel or Revelation in the Bible) of the number seven to represent completeness. When used to reference time, seven units of time is symbolic of a long period, so "seven ages" could represent a timeframe approaching eternity.

The next lines reinforce the implications of such a long journey by recounting the endless generations of the self-replicating RNA molecules that come and go as "life after life must pass through the door." The "door" which is passed is the figurative portal separating existence from non-existence.

The secret revealed
When you leave your cave
Is a glory of thunder
And life from the grave

The promise of "the secret revealed" is ironic as the following lines are perhaps the most cryptic of all. Based on the structure of the sentence, "the secret" is "a glory of thunder and life from the grave." But what does that mean? And what is the significance of the timing of leaving your cave? The reference to leaving your cave is probably a reference to emerging from the "cave" of ignorance and primitive beliefs, allowing the secret to be revealed, as Plato suggested in his Allegory of the Cave from Book VII of The Republic (circa 360 B.C.). The "glory of thunder" would then be the "thunder" heard with the final "aha!" of enlightenment when we finally understand the truth of our beginnings. The thunder has another meaning, too, by referring to the sound made by the electrical discharge (lightning) that stimulates the RNA in the spores which have arrived on Earth to transform from a state of lifelessess to that of DNA-based life.

The people have massed
In the center of town
We drink from a glass
And the world turns around

Once the discovery of the truth about human origins becomes accepted, the enlightened people gather together and celebrate with a toast of champagne. As word of the discovery spreads, the entire world takes notice and "turns around."

[The following is an alternate interpretation that was developed more as an intellectual excercise than as a likely meaning behind the song. Still, anything is possible. Perhaps JC was intentionally leaving the meaning ambiguous or even intentionally layering multiple meanings into a single song?]

The Serpent Is Rising uses an epic science-fantasy story as a vehicle to recount, through analogy, the story of humanities emergence, with God's divine assistance, to an understanding of the secret of eternal life.

In the abyss of space
From the center of time
A superman race
Moves the Serpent to climb

Heaven is often characterized as being "above," which to one familiar with modern science would, if taken literally, be in the endless depths of space. The choice of the word abyss might also have been intentional in its association with Satan, who is often characterized as a serpent, creating a harsh contrast to its use in describing the location of Heaven. God and His angels exist in a state outside the limits of time as we understand it, characterize here as "the center of time." The "superman race" may be the angels in God's service, carrying out his commands in moving the Serpent (analogous to humanity's DNA - more on that later) to "climb" (or ascend, indicating that the DNA is being improved).

The journey has lasted
Seven ages or more
Life after life
Must pass through the door

The "journey" is a figurative journey through time rather than space. The "seven ages" are the entirety of human history, using the numerical significance of seven as a measure of completeness in combination with the indefinitely long period of time characteristic of an age to create an image of time approaching an eternity. All the while, the cycle of life beginning and ending continues, waiting for the day that the secret of eternal life is revealed.

The secret revealed
When you leave your cave
Is a glory of thunder
And life from the grave

When Christ rose from the grave, the secret to eternal life was revealed. The "glory of thunder" is perhaps the earthquake that preceded the arrival of the angel that rolled away the stone from the mouth of the cave in which Christ was entombed.

The people have massed
In the center of town
We drink from a glass
And the world turns around

The people massing in the center of town are gathering at the Cathedral to worship. The choice of words is careful, as the worship service is called "mass." A significant ceremony of Catholic mass is holy communion, one part of which is the drinking of wine from a glass.

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The "serpent" is the double-helix of human DNA, an intertwining coil of two strands of molecules present in every cell of the human body, including the tissue of the spine that ties together all other parts of the body. The "light" which is revealed is the light of God's truth, which has been present in the depths of every person's mind and soul from the beginning, but which has only been understood for a relatively small fraction of human history.

[Below is an alternate interpretation of the meaning of the chorus submitted to the Styx Internet Mailing List.]

If you don't mind Todd, I'd like to muddy the waters a little more. The following lyric reminds me of something I came acrosswhile studying eastern meditation and healing methods.

> The Serpent is rising
> Uncoiling in your spine
> Bringing you light
> From the depths of your mind

Most people usually have alot of energy built up in their first chakra, at the base of their spine, and less in the chakras higher up in the body. One meditation practice for balancingand creativity, is to imagine the energy in your base chakraas a coiled snake that as it uncoils brings energy to each chakrathat it passes through until it reaches the chakra at the top ofyour head. In this way the tail of the serpent is at the base of your spine and the head even with your head.

The first chakra, at the base of the spine, is related to physical andworldy persuits. The chakra at the top of your head is ,of course, related to spirituality and enlightenment. The theory is that if each of your chakras has the same amount of energy as the others, that you will be a healthier and more balanced person.

It's something to think about, anyway. I do see how it fits in withthe whole theory of extraterrestrial origin and the superhumans. To begin with we were, as a race more concerned with survivalthan spiritual pursuits. Now, we have more leasure for spiritual pursuits. Our answers were incoded in us and now we have thetime to find them.

Also the RNA/DNA stuff works well with this. If you think of the atomas a small picture of the workings of the universe, then the RNA/DNA can be seen as symbolic of the spine and energy's traveling along it.

Also, isn't a snake just a spine with a head?

Krakatoa (Curulewski) - 1:36

Krakatoa you've changed your ways
From evil days.
Oh I know a once violent isle
And gentle smile.
When the dust and lava cooled
You were sterile as the rock from which the earth was tooled.
Was man's beginning a wind borne spore
To fly no more?
Nature's winning her docile spree
Has set her free.
Seeds were wafted on the wind
Forming heavy undergrowth for species winged and finned.
Tangled mangles rebuilt your soil
From age dead toil.
Sheltered bay coves protecting life
From Satan's knife.
Grow and island in the sun
Where the hell fire belching earth had destructively left none.

Interpretation

This poem beautifully invokes the terrible images appropriate to the eruption of the volcano Krakatau (also known as Krakatoa) near Java in Indonesia in 1883. The poem begins with the lines "Krakatoa you've changed your ways from evil days," drawing the listener in with a reminder that while Krakatoa is among the most infamous of volcanoes, the eruption happened a full 90 years earlier (the album was released in 1973). He further recognizes the past infamy of the volcanic eruption with the line "Oh I know a once violent isle and gentle smile," for while the island was once violent, during the destruction, its remnants are islands that form an arc like a smile, nestled peacefully in ocean.

Following the eruption, he says, "When the dust and lava cooled you were sterile as the rock from which the earth was tooled." It was a long time before the dust and lava cooled, and what remained was devoid of life. He asks the question of man's powerlessness to avoid the 36,400 deaths with the line "Was man's beginning a wind borne spore to fly no more?" (a line with a double meaning, for it likely also ties back to the Directed Panspermia theme of The Serpent Is Rising, which leads into this poem). And he further makes the point by saying, "Nature's winning her docile spree has set her free," indicating that this is nature's way of starting over. It soon becomes evident why, as the cycle of life continues, "Seeds were wafted on the wind forming heavy undergrowth for species winged and finned." The hard volcanic rock and loose volcanic ash are quickly (geologically speaking) ground into soil by the probing roots of the returning plant life as can be seen in the line "Tangled mangles rebuilt your soil from age dead toil."

The next line, "Sheltered bay coves protecting life from Satan's knife," can be interpreted in one of two ways. The term "Satan's knife" may be referring to the streams of hot magma, conjuring up images of a weapon thrust from the fires of Hell deep beneath the surface of the Earth. The bay coves may be "protecting life" by stopping the flow of the magma when it hits the cooling waters of the bay. It is also possible, however, to interpret the line to mean that the bay coves of the islands formed during the eruption as being constructed in such a way as to prevent predators, possibly including humans, from preying on the aquatic life taking refuge there. In this alternate interpretation, "Satan's knife" may be the predators, although imagery for the first interpretation is more compelling.

The poem ends with the lines, "Grow and island in the sun where the hell fire belching earth had destructively left none." This ending is very fitting because on August 27, 1883, concluding a three month chain of events that began with an earthquake on May 20, 1883, Krakatoa erupted with a force so great that it threw four cubic miles of earth into the atmosphere and instantly vanished as if devoured by the sea, causing formidable tidal waves which in turn swept off just about everything alive from the surrounding coastal areas. However, the disappearance of the gigantic Krakatoa also meant the birth of small islands in its place, one of which is called "Anak Krakatau" (or Krakatoa's Child) which is at present an extremely active young volcano. Thus, Anak Krakatau is the "island in the sun" which grows "where the hell fire belching earth had destructively left none."

Hallelujah Chorus (Handel) - 2:14

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah
For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

King of kings and Lord of lords
King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forever and ever
Forever and ever

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Interpretation

The uplifiting religious lyrics pose a striking contrast to the anti-creation Directed Panspermia theme of The Serpent Is Rising and the dark images and power-of-nature theme of the poem Krakatoa, for which this classical masterpiece is acting as a coda. The Hallelujah Chorus is perhaps the most recognizeable part of Handel's Messiah. The lyrics are based on the following verses from the Bible:

Hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth, Hallelujah!
Revelation 19:6

The Kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever, Hallelujah!
Revelation 11:15

King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, and He shall reign for ever and ever, Hallelujah!
Revelation 19:16
