Average song rating This is a superbly crafted song, with the three-part harmony intro coming in like a sweet surprise (even after dozens of listenings) and the effervescent piano allowing the 63-year old Paul to "let his hair down" a little.

Of course, the firestorm of ugly publicity of Paul and Heather's divorce puts this song (and, more tragically, the wondrous song "Heather") into a most unfortunate limbo--I would suspect that for Paul himself, these have become non-songs...I wonder what his thoughts are when these songs are replayed...

This song contains another striking irony in its lyrics: the line "You and me, side by side, we know how to change the world", which inevitably causes me to flash back to John Lennon's song "Isolation" from the Plastic Ono Band album, when he resignedly sings, "Just a boy and a little girl, trying to change the whole wide world". John's line always disgusted me with its arrogance and distorted view of his own ability to meet with world leaders to "give peace a chance". Much as I dislike to do so, I now have to see the well-adjusted, stable Paul McCartney falling under the same self-delusion...marrying a woman younger than his step-daughter Heather and deciding to save the world from land mines and animal cruelty by the force of his persona. Not a pretty picture.

Lyrics

Looking through the backyard of my life
Time to sweep the fallen leaves away

[Chorus - harmonies]
Like the sun that rises every day
We can chase the dark clouds from the sky

I gave my promise to you girl, I don't wanna take it back
You and me, side by side, We know how to change the world
That is why, I gave my promise to you girl

Hey why wait another day, that won't get us anywhere
All the time, that ain't changed, to repair this brave old world
We'll be up, I gave my promise to you girl

[Chorus - harmonies]
Everything single second of our life
We can use to chase the clouds away

[Guitar Solo]

Well, there's no more barking up the tree, no more howling at the moon
Same old scene, you and I, diving for the deepest trust
That is why, I gave my promise to you girl

[Chorus - guitar]

[Chorus - oh woh]

Looking through the backyard of my life
