Glass Onion

Average song rating The White Album period is reportedly the time when John's heart turned from his three mates and toward Yoko, in time leading to a pretty bitter public rift between John and Paul (thankfully healed before the murder of John). In this song, however, John seems to give Paul a lot of love with the lyrics "we're as close as can be man" and by citing lyrics from three of Paul's songs ("Fixing a Hole", "Lady Madonna" and "The Fool on the Hill").

This is a pretty cool, clever song which John reportedly wrote to give overzealous Beatles fans a lot of empty fodder for analysis. If you listen closely you can hear the strings fade-out quite uniquely at the very end, seguing immediately into the startling piano intro to "Ob-la-di..."

Lyrics

I told you about Strawberry Fields
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here's another place you can go
Where everything flows.
Looking through the bent backed tulips
To see how the other half live
Looking through a glass onion.

I told you about the walrus and me-man
You know that we're as close as can be-man
Well here's another clue for you all
The walrus was Paul.
Standing on the cast iron shore-yeah
Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet-yeah
Looking through a glass onion.

I told you about the fool on the hill
I tell you man he living there still
Well here's another place you can be
Listen to me.
Fixing a hole in the ocean
Trying to make a dove-tail joint-yeah
Looking through a glass onion.
