The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill

Average song rating On one level, this song is a humorous throwaway, giving Yoko, Ringo, and Maureen a chance to sing along, whistle, play the French horn, and clown around in a fashion similar to this song's side B twin, "Rocky Raccoon".

I cannot help but be a little disturbed when I examine the lyrics and see the level of intolerant, smoking sarcasm that John Lennon levels against a sort of person that he obviously has never had anything to do with. He addresses the rural, NRA-supporting, self sufficient sort of man with the bigoted, disparaging label "All-American bullet headed Saxon mother's son", disparages this man's independence with the statement, "in case of accidents he always took his Mum", and attacks the man's morality with "if looks could kill it would have been us instead of him". Lennon's fans and the music media always want to portray him as the open-minded, generous and tolerant liberal who was above such petty prejudices. Boy, does this song shoot that nice little theory in the foot. Take a few minutes and compare the lyrics of this song to Pete Townshend's "Baba O'Riley", which is written about the same sort of man. You could write a fascinating essay about the differing attitudes.

Lyrics

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill?

He went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun
In case of accidents he always took his mom
He's the all American bullet-headed saxon mother's son.
All the children sing

Hey Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill?

Deep in the jungle where the mighty tiger lies
Bill and his elephants were taken by surprise
So Captain Marvel zapped in right between the eyes
All the children sing

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill?

The children asked him if to kill was not a sin
Not when he looked so fierce, his mother butted in
If looks could kill it would have been us instead of him
All the children sing

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill?
