Average song rating Wings' second single, and another song which doubtlessly caused Henry McCullough and Denny Laine to scratch their heads (to say nothing of fans and critics!). The party line was that Paul released this song in response to the banning of "Give Ireland...", but Paul has denied that this was his motivation. Mostly, it was Paul seeking to move his music in a more family direction as this had become the primary focus in his life at this point. He had a baby daughter named Mary, and noted with surprise that the familiar nursery song written by Sarah Hale contained many more verses than he ever suspected. Intrigued by this, he pretty much replicated the process which made "Golden Slumbers" such a huge success two years before, and devised a different melody from the well-known one. It is not difficult to hear seven-year-old Heather singing along and giggling while listening to this track. Radio stations receiving this single which was not particularly FM-friendly turned the single over and more often played the B-side... Bruce Beatlefan June 5, 2009

Lyrics

Mary had a little lamb,
His fleece was white as snow,
Ev'rywhere that mary went,
That lamb was sur to go.

And you could hear them singing:
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

He followed her to school one day,
It was against the rules,
Made the children laugh and play to
See a lamb at school.

You could hear them singing:
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Soon the teacher turned it out,
Still it lingered near,
Waited patiently about till
Mary did appear.

You could hear them singing:
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

"But the lamb loved Mary so",
The eager children cry,
"And mary loves the lamb, you know",
The teacher did reply.

And you could hear them singing:
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
(ev'ry body singing)
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
