Biker Like an Icon

Average song rating "Biker Like an Icon" became a minor hit because of the somber energy it accumulates through its repetition, and through some creative combinations of "ike" sounding words ("...but the biker didn't like her").

When combined with two previous Paul McCartney songs, however ("She's Leaving Home" and "Don't Be Careless Love") you have a very interesting insight into a very personal part of Paul and Linda McCartney's life, as they attempt to usher three young daughters into womanhood. It is pretty well-known that the eldest, Heather See McCartney ran with some wild crowds (in particular, she gained a little notoriety as Billy Idol's girlfriend) which caused a lot of tension between herself and step-dad Paul (allegedly inspiring the song "Riding to Vanity Fair"). All of a sudden, "Biker Like an Icon" takes on more poignancy, the anxiety of a "nice" couple raising a daughter who inexplicably commits herself to such a parent's worst nightmare: the biker (or, perhaps, a rocker like Billy Idol. It might well be that Billy Idol is as gentle as a lamb and as responsible as a judge, but his popular persona would terrify any parent). As with many Paul McCartney songs which on the surface seem trivial, there is a lot more here than meets the eye.

Lyrics

There Was A Girl Who Loved A Biker
She Used To Follow Him Across America
But The Biker Didn't Like Her.

She Didn't Care, She Still Persisted
Though Her Brother Said She Was Twisted
And The Family Said They Wouldn't Miss Her
Anyway.

She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Gazing At His Picture Everyday.
She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Slowly Watching Precious Water Drip Away.

She Did Her Best To Fix A Meeting
She Pulled It Off One Night In Hollywood
When He Met Her He Couldn't Let Her Get Away.

He Didn't Ask For Her Permission
He Took Advantage Of Her Position
But He Was Always Her Ambitiion
Anyway.

She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Gazing At His Picture Everyday.
She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Slowly Watching Precious Water Drip Away.

The Family Tried So Hard To Find Her
They Showed Her Picture Across America.
But No Trace Of Her Sweet Face
Was Ever Found.

She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Gazing At His Picture Everyday.
She Loved The Biker Like An Icon
Slowly Watching Precious Water Drip Away.
