"Magic Bus" is a mildly Bo-Diddly beat song about a guy who rides a bus, decides he wants to buy it, and dickers with the owner about its price (it may well be the only song in history that uses the lyric "thruppence"). No wonder Pete Townshend waited three years before deigning to release it as a single! To his surprise, it became a successful hit and remains one of the Who's essential live songs (the Live at Leeds version is particularly superb). Because John Entwistle grew to detest playing the torturously monotonous bass, "Magic Bus" underwent a radical reworking in the more recent Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD.
