“Armida” by Gioachino Rossini

Premiere / date of written: 11 November 1817

Armida is a dramatic opera by Gioachino Rossini, premiered 11 November 1817 at the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples. Based on Jerusalem Delivered, it tells the story of the sorceress Armida, who falls in love with the Crusader knight Rinaldo, torn between passion and duty.

The opera is notable for its virtuosic soprano role (one of Rossini’s most demanding), its rich orchestration, and its blend of heroic, romantic, and supernatural elements. Unlike many Rossini works, Armida features an unusually large number of tenor roles and focuses heavily on psychological conflict rather than comic or purely heroic action.
