Der fliegende Holländer: German–English Side-by-Side Opera Libretto (Paperback)

With Der fliegende Holländer returning to the stage this season — including performances at the Vienna State Opera this spring, the Bayreuth Festival this summer, and a new production by West Australian Opera — I revisited the libretto once again, refining the translation and preparing it for print.

The paperback edition of the German–English side-by-side libretto is now available:

As with my previous editions, the goal was to preserve the structure, meaning, and dramatic flow of Wagner’s original text — allowing the English to follow the German as closely and naturally as possible during listening.

Der fliegende Holländer stands at a decisive moment in Wagner’s development: already shaped by the idea of redemption through love, yet still direct, concentrated, and dramatically immediate. The language is elemental, almost ballad-like — making it especially suitable for a parallel-text format, where meaning and musical line can be followed together.

A practical tool for listening — and a closer way to experience Wagner’s early masterpiece.
